Echo and Echo Dot hardware: every shape, and where each keeps its light

Almost every set of instructions assumes you know which model you own. Most people do not. The box is long gone, the name was never memorable, and a decade of releases has produced tall ones, flat ones, round ones and ones with screens.

A speaker with no screen still has to tell you what it is doing, so the designers made a ring of coloured light the entire display. Each shade is simply the unit announcing where it stands — no more mysterious, in principle, than the light on a kettle.

The one worth learning by heart is red. Red means the microphone has been switched off at the device itself, by the button on top, rather than merely being ignored by software. That distinction is the whole reason the button exists as physical hardware, and it is why the indicator is a colour that cannot be mistaken for anything else. Pressing the same button again restores it.

Where the ring lives has moved across generations, which is worth knowing before concluding that a speaker is not lighting up at all. On the tall cylinder it runs around the top edge. On the flat puck it is set into the top surface. On the fabric ball it sits low down near the base and glows onto the surface beneath. Screen models have no ring at all.

Most models carry four controls on the top surface, and they have been consistent for years.

  • Volume up and volume down. On the earliest tall model these were replaced by a ring around the top that you rotate — elegant, and baffling until somebody tells you.
  • The action button. A single dot. It wakes the speaker without speaking to it, and dismisses timers and alarms, which is its most-used purpose by a distance.
  • The microphone switch. Marked with a crossed-out microphone. A hardware control, which is why the ring turns red rather than the speaker simply promising to ignore you.

On screen models the controls sit along the top edge instead, and most add a physical shutter over the camera lens.

It is worth finding the microphone switch by touch once, in daylight, while not trying to do anything else. It is the one control you may want to reach without your glasses.

Placement affects both the microphones and the radio. A few points hold across all the shapes: not in a corner or hard against a wall, where sound reflects and the microphones work harder; not inside a cabinet or behind glass, which muffles the microphones and weakens the signal; and away from the kitchen sink and hob, since running water and extractor fans are the two sounds these devices struggle with most.

Consider where the light is visible from, too. A fabric ball on a low shelf casts its light downwards where nobody is looking; the same unit at eye level is obvious.

Before passing a speaker to somebody else, remove it from your account in the app. Until that is done it holds both a copy of your Wi-Fi password and a link to your account, and clearing it afterwards is considerably more awkward.

What every model has in common

A correction worth making

These are dual-band devices. Mainstream Echo and Echo Dot models, including the older generations, support both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signals your router sends out. Manufacturer specifications list dual-band 802.11a/b/g/n support, with 802.11ac added on later models.

You will often read that early Echo Dots are restricted to 2.4 GHz. That is not correct, and it matters because it sends people hunting for a limitation that is not there.

The reason 2.4 GHz dominates the advice anyway is range — it travels further and copes better with walls and floors. It is also the band that many other smart home gadgets are genuinely limited to, which is probably where the folklore began. Our wireless basics guide covers the two bands properly.

That last row is worth dwelling on. A great deal of what an Echo appears to do happens on servers rather than inside the housing — it captures sound, sends it away, and plays back what comes back. The device is a thin client, which is why it can be small and inexpensive, and why replacing one is largely painless.

How shapes changed

How the shapes changed, and what each change was for

The progression from tall cylinder to fabric ball was not styling for its own sake. Each change solved a problem the previous shape had, and knowing which is which makes an unfamiliar unit easier to place.

The tall cylinder came first, and it shows

The original was designed to sit somewhere prominent and be heard across a room, which is why it is tall, why the speaker driver fires downwards, and why the light ring is at the top where it can be seen from a distance. The rotating volume ring belongs to the same era: elegant, tactile, and completely undiscoverable to anyone who has not been told it turns.

The flat puck was about price and placement

Reducing the height removed most of the audio hardware and most of the cost, producing something that could be bought several at a time and scattered around a house. The trade is audible — a puck is a control surface with a small speaker attached rather than something you would choose to listen to music on — and the compact housing leaves less room inside for aerial separation, which is why placement relative to the router matters slightly more.

The ball was about sound and light

A sphere gives a small enclosure more internal volume for its footprint, which is worth a good deal in audio terms. Moving the light to a band near the base was the more interesting decision: it makes the indicator visible as a glow on the surrounding surface rather than requiring line of sight to the top. On a low shelf that works well. On a dark surface, in daylight, it is easy to miss entirely — which is the one drawback worth knowing about before deciding a speaker is not responding.

Screens changed the interaction rather than the networking

Adding a display alters what the device is for, but nothing underneath. The same radios, the same permissions on your phone, the same relationship with the account. What changes is that part of the first-run sequence appears on the device itself, so the phone and the screen are used together rather than the phone alone.

Which Echo is this, exactly?

By shape rather than model name, which is almost never printed on the device. A tall cylinder is a full-size Echo; a low flat puck is an earlier Echo Dot; a fabric ball with a flattened base is a later one; anything with a display is an Echo Show.

Where the light sits confirms it — top edge, top surface, or a band near the base.

Do older Echo Dots only work on 2.4 GHz?

No, and this is one of the most widely repeated errors about these speakers. Manufacturer specifications list dual-band support across the mainstream range, including the older generations.

The folklore probably comes from the rest of the smart home — many plugs, bulbs and sensors genuinely are 2.4 GHz only.

What do the buttons on top do?
