Three things worth knowing first
A speaker almost certainly needs the slower Wi-Fi band. Where two entries appear in the network list and one carries a 5G suffix, it is the other that a speaker needs. A good many models cannot see the faster band at all, which is why it never appears on screen.
The other two are shorter. The application is free and always has been, so anything charging for it is not the one the manufacturer publishes. And the ring of light on the speaker is its only way of telling you what it is doing.
Those three between them account for most of the difficulty people run into. Everything below is detail.
Before you begin
What to have ready
Gathering these first is what turns an evening into ten minutes. Each one is something people typically go hunting for at the exact moment it is wanted.
- The network name, exactly as it appears. Not what you call it, the characters as written. A capital in the wrong place is indistinguishable from a wrong password.
- The password, somewhere readable. Frequently on a sticker on the router itself, and frequently in a typeface that makes zero and capital O look identical.
- The account the speaker will live under. Which matters more than it appears, because moving a speaker to a different account later means releasing it and starting again.
- A socket where the speaker will actually sit. Setting it up beside the router and moving it afterwards is how people discover the far corner has no signal.
The companion app
The application, and what it asks for
Search results in an app store are not a ranked list of authenticity. Paid placement and similar names put convincing imitations near the top, and several ask for things the real one never would.
Four checks that settle it
- The publisher name beneath the title, which should be the manufacturer itself rather than an individual or an unfamiliar company.
- The review count. The genuine application has hundreds of thousands. An imitation has a few hundred.
- The name itself. Copies add words. Guide, setup, manual, pro, assistant. The real one is plainly named.
- The price. It is free. Anything asking for money at the download stage is not it.
Nothing legitimate asks for a card number to set up a speaker. If a screen requests payment details during setup, close it and start again from the store.
The permissions it requests
Each one exists for a reason, and the reasons are duller than they sound.
- Local network. How the handset finds a speaker sitting on the same Wi-Fi. Without it the speaker is invisible and the screen says nothing useful about why.
- Bluetooth. Used for the first handshake before the speaker is on your network at all. It is the bridge, not the destination.
- Location, on some handsets. Not because anybody wants to know where you live. Wi-Fi scanning is governed by location permission on several platforms, so the application has to ask for it to see networks at all.
Both switches sit under the application's own entry in the handset's settings, in the alphabetical list of installed apps.
The sequence
What actually happens, in order
Every setup follows the same four stages regardless of model. Knowing which one you are in tells you what the screen is waiting for.

Why the amber ring worries people
Amber reads as a warning almost universally. On this hardware it reports one thing: no configuration has ever been done, and the unit is standing by. It persists until the whole sequence finishes, and it returns after a reset. A newly unboxed speaker glowing amber is behaving exactly as intended.
The light ring
What each colour is telling you
Most speakers carry no display, so the ring is the whole of their vocabulary for reporting on themselves.

| Red | The microphone has been switched off. A privacy control, not a fault, and the same button restores it. |
| Yellow | Something is queued, usually a message or a delivery notice. Asking what you have missed clears it. |
| Green | A call arriving or in progress. Sometimes another speaker in the house using the intercom. |
| Purple | A brief flash meaning notifications are being held back deliberately. |
| No light | The ordinary resting state once configured. Dark and unresponsive is different, and points at power. |
Of every colour here, red is the one people take for a failure. It means somebody pressed the microphone button, which happens more by accident than people expect.

When there is more than one
One speaker needs no organising. Two is where the arrangement starts to matter, and the decision that counts is made in the first minute.
Name it after the room
Name a unit after where it stands and you can direct music to that room from anywhere in the house simply by saying the word. Name it after the model number and you have told the system nothing, so every later instruction has to compensate. It can be renamed afterwards without difficulty, which is worth knowing before anybody agonises over it.
A room against a group
One describes location, the other describes company. A room records the place a device stands in, so anything said in that place applies there without a unit being named aloud. A group gathers several devices under a single label so they can be addressed at once, wherever they happen to live.
Why two sometimes answer at once
Catch the wake word on two units at once and they hold a rapid comparison of who heard it more distinctly, after which one replies and the rest fall silent. A double answer means that comparison came out too close to call, which happens when units stand almost side by side or in a hard-surfaced room where sound rebounds. Putting distance between them resolves it.
Units expected to cooperate must share one account and one network. Registered to separate accounts, they have no awareness of one another whatsoever.
Frequently encountered
Common situations, and what usually causes them
- The speaker never appears in the application. Local network or Bluetooth permission, almost always. Both sit under the application's entry in the handset's settings.
- The network list shows two names. One router publishing its two radios separately. The speaker wants the one without the 5G suffix.
- Setup finishes, then the speaker drops off. Often too weak a signal where it finally sits. Worth testing in the intended position rather than beside the router.
- Everything stopped after a broadband change. Every connected thing stored the old network details and all of those stopped being true at once. Each wants telling afresh, which is shorter than starting over.
- The ring stays amber indefinitely. Setup began but did not finish, or the speaker has never been configured at all.
- It answers from the wrong room. The names. A speaker named after a model rather than a room makes every later instruction ambiguous.
Where a situation persists beyond these, the manufacturer is the right place to go next. They hold model-specific information and the warranty, and they can examine the unit itself.
