The mechanism

How Alexa and Echo Dot Wi-Fi connections work: the four-stage handover

An Amazon Echo or Echo Dot has no screen and no keyboard, which raises an interesting question: how does a Wi-Fi name and password ever reach it? The answer is a short, four-stage handover, and understanding it explains most of what these devices do.

  1. The Echo announces itself over BluetoothAn Echo speaker with no Wi-Fi network of its own broadcasts over Bluetooth instead — a radio that works between two devices without either being online. This is why the instructions ask for a phone kept close: Bluetooth reaches a few metres and no further.
  2. The Wi-Fi details cross over that linkThe Alexa app reads which network the phone is currently joined to, and passes that name and password across the Bluetooth link. The Echo receives them the way a person receives a written address.
  3. The Echo joins the Wi-Fi by itselfBluetooth steps aside, having done its whole job. The speaker uses what it was handed to join the wireless network directly, exactly as a laptop would, and from here it needs no help from the phone at all.
  4. It registers with AmazonFinally the Echo contacts Amazon's servers over the internet, binds itself to the account that introduced it, and usually collects a software update before it is ready. This last stage is what makes it a voice assistant rather than a speaker.

Why the order matters. Each stage depends only on the one before it. An Echo can complete stage three — connecting to Wi-Fi — and fail stage four, or sit powered and idle having completed all four. The stages are separate states, not a single switch, and that is the single most useful thing to understand about the device.

Stored details

Alexa Wi-Fi memory: passwords, SSIDs, reconnecting and router changes

At the end of that handover, the Echo holds a copy of two things: the Wi-Fi network's name and its password. It keeps both in its own memory and holds them indefinitely.

This is why an Echo Dot reconnects to its network on its own after a power cut, without anybody doing anything: it re-syncs with the stored pair rather than starting over. It is also why deleting the Alexa app from a phone changes nothing: the phone was a courier, not a permanent part of the arrangement. The details live on the Echo itself.

The consequence follows naturally. The stored pair describes one specific network. Where a router is replaced or a provider changes, the name and password issued are generally new ones, and a stored copy of the old pair no longer describes anything that exists, leaving the speaker nothing to reconnect to. The device has not forgotten; it is remembering accurately, which in that situation is precisely the difficulty.

Even a replacement router carrying the old name and password can behave differently underneath, because newer equipment may require a newer security standard or hand out its local addresses on a different scheme. The name a network broadcasts and the arrangement behind it are two separate things.

Amazon account and Wi-Fi network are independent. Which Amazon account an Echo answers to is held by Amazon on its servers, not by the router. A device keeps its account registration across any number of network changes, and being on the right network says nothing about which account it belongs to.

The ring

Echo and Echo Dot light ring colours: status and privacy signals

On a speaker with no display, that band of colour is the entire vocabulary the device has for reporting on itself. Each shade carries a specific meaning, and the set is small enough to learn in a minute.

OrangeThe device considers itself not yet introduced. This is the colour a new speaker shows out of the box, and the manuals call this waiting condition setup mode. It reads as a warning almost universally and means nothing of the sort.
BlueSpinning blue shortly after power is the ordinary start-up sequence. Blue while somebody is speaking means the wake word was caught and the device is listening. Blue after speech has stopped means it is still working on what it heard.
RedThe microphone has been switched off at the button on the device. This is a privacy control that physically stops the device listening, not a fault, and the same button restores it.
YellowSomething is waiting: usually a message or a delivery notice. A nudge rather than a problem, and asking the device what has been missed clears it.
GreenPulsing green means a call is arriving; steady green means one is in progress. It can also indicate another speaker in the house using the intercom feature to reach this room.
PurpleA brief purple flash after a request indicates the do-not-disturb setting is active, so notifications are being deliberately held back. A choice somebody made, not a fault.
No lightAn introduced speaker sitting idle shows nothing at all. Darkness is its ordinary resting state and reports no condition whatever.

On the sphere-shaped generations the ring runs around the base rather than the top, which catches people out when they go looking for it on the lid.

The range

Echo model reference: Echo Dot, Show, Studio and generation differences

Amazon has revised the Echo range several times since the first Amazon Echo, and the names have accumulated. The shapes below cover it broadly; the differences are worth knowing before going looking for a light — or a screen — in the wrong place.

The tall cylinder

The full-size Echo, and the earlier Studio

The form of the original full-size Echo and of the pre-2025 Echo Studio. Larger drivers, so it fills a room properly, and it takes a mains socket rather than a shelf edge.

Recent generations of this shape are dual-band, meaning they can use either Wi-Fi signal. The slower band still reaches further where a device sits some distance from the router.

The sphere

The Echo Dot from the fourth generation onward

The ball arrived with the fourth generation and continued through the fifth. The small ones are the Echo Dot; the larger one is the full-size Echo of the same era. Size apart, they behave identically.

On these the light ring runs around the base rather than the top.

The low puck

The earlier Echo Dot: first to third generation

The flat Echo Dot, a common gift and bundled extra in its day and still widely in use. The ring sits on the top face where it is easy to see.

The earliest generations have their own routine for returning to setup mode, set out in Amazon's literature for those models.

A screen model

The Echo Show family, and the Spot

The Echo Show — the 5, the 8, the 11, the 15 and the 21, with the older 10 still in many homes — along with the round-faced Spot. These guide their own introduction on the display.

Because they have a screen and a touch interface, their settings are reachable on the device itself rather than only through the phone application.

Dot, Show, Studio, Pop

The Echo Dot is the small round speaker and the one most households own. Its first three generations were flat pucks; the fourth and fifth are spheres. In September 2025 Amazon added the Echo Dot Max, a larger and more powerful model in the same family, which reached buyers at the end of October that year.

The Echo Show family carries a touchscreen: the Show 5, 8, 11, 15 and 21, with the older Show 10 still in many homes and the round-faced Echo Spot alongside them. The Show 8 and the new Show 11 were both introduced in the September 2025 revision. Screen models differ from the rest in one practical way: they present their own settings on the display, so the phone application is not the only route to them.

Echo Studio is the large speaker built for music. The 2025 version was redesigned into a round, knit-covered enclosure roughly forty per cent smaller than its predecessor. Echo Pop is the compact half-sphere sold as an entry model.

The generations, named

Because the same product name has covered several quite different objects, a generation is often the only way to say which device is meant. The table below names them and describes what distinguishes each. It is a naming reference: it does not carry instructions, and specifications for any current model are published on Amazon's own product pages.

Where a procedure differs by model or generation — most often the button combination that returns a device to setup mode, which some manuals call pairing mode — Amazon's documentation for that specific model is the authority, since those combinations have changed across the years. This page deliberately does not reproduce them.

Plain English

Alexa app, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi vocabulary, explained

Documentation about Alexa, Echo speakers and home Wi-Fi is written by people who have forgotten which words are ordinary and which are not. One example before the rest: Wi-Fi is the spelling used by the body that defines the standard, while wifi and wi fi are written everywhere else, and all three mean the same network. These are the ones that trip readers up most often.

Words used without explanation

Twenty-eight terms

Wi-Fi band
A router sends out two signals at once. One is slower and travels further; the other is faster and stops sooner. A great deal of connected equipment is built around the slower one.
2.4 GHz
The slower of the two signals. It passes through walls and floors considerably better, which is why it suits a device at the far end of a house.
5 GHz
The faster signal, excellent beside the router and markedly weaker once anything solid stands in the way. It has nothing to do with mobile-phone 5G, despite the name.
Band steering
A router publishing both signals under one name and deciding for itself which each device receives. Convenient day to day, and the source of a good deal of confusion about which network a device is actually on.
SSID
The technical name for a Wi-Fi network's name — the word that appears in a phone's Wi-Fi list, and the word printed on a router's factory label.
Passphrase
The secret that encrypts a Wi-Fi network and admits devices to it. It belongs to the network rather than to any account, and it is set at the router.
WPA2 and WPA3
Two generations of Wi-Fi security standard. WPA3 is the newer and stronger. Some older devices understand only WPA2, which is why routers commonly offer a mode supporting both at once.
Router
The box that creates a home network, hands out local addresses and connects the household to its internet provider. When a provider changes, this box usually changes with it.
Modem
The box that brings the internet into a building from outside. Frequently built into the same case as the router now, which is why one unit does both jobs.
Mesh
Several coordinated units spread through a building, all publishing one network name and handing devices between themselves as people move around. A way of covering a large or awkward home evenly.
Guest network
A second network a router broadcasts for visitors, kept separate from the main one. Devices on it typically cannot see each other or anything on the main network, which is the entire point of the feature.
Captive portal
A network that opens a sign-in page in a browser before granting access. Hotels and libraries work this way, and a device with no screen and no browser has no way to complete such a page.
Bluetooth
A short-range link between two devices that works without either being on a network. It is how a new speaker is reached before it has joined any Wi-Fi.
Local network permission
A setting on a phone that allows an application to see other devices on the same Wi-Fi. With it switched off, an application is handed an empty list rather than an error.
Wake word
The word that tells a speaker to begin listening. Until it hears that word, it is not sending anything anywhere.
Light ring
The band of colour on a speaker. With no display to speak of, it is the whole of the device's vocabulary for reporting on itself.
Firmware
The software living inside the device itself, as distinct from the application on a phone. It updates quietly and on its own.
Setup mode
The waiting condition a speaker shows with an orange light — brand new, or returned to its starting state. In this condition it is discoverable over Bluetooth. Manuals sometimes call it pairing mode.
Pairing
The short Bluetooth introduction between phone and speaker at the very start. Once the speaker is on the Wi-Fi, pairing has done its whole job.
Device registration
The record, held by Amazon rather than by the router, binding a particular device to a particular account. It is created when the device is first introduced under that account and persists until the account holder removes it.
Wi-Fi
The wireless network in a home. Written Wi-Fi by the organisation that defines it, and wifi or wi fi almost everywhere else. The three spellings mean the same thing, and Amazon's own material uses the hyphenated form.
Dual-band
Able to use either of the two Wi-Fi signals a router sends out. Mainstream Echo models are dual-band, older generations included, which is why the 2.4 GHz advice is about reach rather than a restriction.
Provisioning
The industry word for the whole business of handing a device its network details for the first time. Amazon's literature usually says setup instead.
Simple Setup
Amazon's name for an arrangement in which network details already stored against an account can be offered to a new device, so they need not be entered again. It is a convenience feature, not a separate product.
Access point
The part of a router that broadcasts the wireless signal. A mesh system has several, all publishing the same network name.
Alexa app
The application published by Amazon for phones and tablets. It is the usual route to a speaker's settings, and on screened models it is not the only route, since those carry their own settings on the display.
Amazon account
The account a device is registered to. It is held on Amazon's servers, entirely separately from the Wi-Fi network, and the two change independently of one another.
Internet connection
The line out of the house, distinct from the Wi-Fi inside it. A device can be joined to Wi-Fi perfectly while the connection beyond the router is down — which is exactly why the two are worth naming separately.

App-store literacy

Alexa app verification: publisher, installs, reviews and store title

App-store searches can return guides, utilities and applications that use Alexa-related language. An icon, a prominent placement or a familiar word is not, by itself, evidence that an app comes from Amazon. The listing provides several details that can be read together.

Searches about voice speakers attract a substantial industry of fraudulent operations. They are not subtle once the shape of them is known, and the surest defence is not a list of warning signs but knowing exactly what the genuine channels are — because anything outside them is, by definition, not Amazon.

Where genuine help comes from

These, and nothing else.

  • amazon.com, reached by typing it into the address bar rather than by following a link from a search advertisement
  • The Alexa application, obtained only from the App Store on iOS or Google Play on Android, which carries Amazon's own help material inside it
  • The printed material in the box, which names the model and points at the manufacturer's documentation for it
  • Amazon's own customer service, reached from within an account that has already been signed into on amazon.com

What no genuine channel does

Any one of these settles the question.

  • Publishes a telephone number in a search advertisement for smart-speaker assistance
  • Asks to take control of a computer or phone, or to have remote-access software installed
  • Requests an account password, or a verification code sent by text
  • Charges a fee to activate, register or configure a device that costs nothing to configure
  • Applies time pressure — an account about to be locked, action needed within minutes

The reasoning is worth stating plainly. A verification code exists precisely to prove that the person holding it is the account owner. Handing it to somebody else transfers that proof to them, which is the whole purpose of asking for it. A genuine representative already knows this and will never ask.

Smart Home Networking Protocols

Connected-home products can use several layers of networking at once. Matter, Thread, Zigbee and Wi-Fi name different standards and roles within that broader system; none is simply another name for the others.

Terms used in newer smart-home devices

Three definitions
Definitions are listed below for reference.
Matter & Thread
Matter is an interoperability standard for compatible smart-home products, while Thread is a low-power IPv6 mesh network that can carry Matter traffic. A Thread Border Router joins a Thread mesh to the household IP network, providing a path between Thread devices and compatible IP-based controllers on that local network. Amazon's compatibility documentation identifies the Echo (4th Gen), Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen), Echo Show 15 (2nd Gen) and Echo Show 8 (3rd Gen, 2025 release) among Echo models with built-in Thread Border Router hardware. The exact capability remains model-, generation-, region- and software-dependent.
Zigbee
Zigbee is a low-power mesh protocol built on IEEE 802.15.4. In Echo models with a built-in Zigbee smart-home hub, a separate radio coordinates compatible Zigbee products locally. That hub role differs from standard Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi is a higher-throughput wireless local-area networking standard that commonly carries IP traffic, whereas Zigbee is a low-power mesh technology. Both can use 2.4 GHz radio spectrum, but they are distinct standards.
Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) and Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac)
These names describe Wi-Fi protocol generations rather than frequency bands. Wi-Fi 5 is based on 802.11ac and operates in the 5 GHz band; Wi-Fi 6 is based on 802.11ax and can operate in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. The 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz labels therefore describe radio spectrum, not the Wi-Fi generation, so a network can be both Wi-Fi 6 and 2.4 GHz. Wi-Fi 6E adds 6 GHz operation, a separate band.
These definitions describe protocol roles and do not alter a network, account or device.

What is the difference between Alexa and an Echo?

Alexa is the voice service; an Echo is a piece of hardware that carries it. Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Show, Echo Studio, Echo Spot and Echo Pop are all Echo devices running Alexa. The distinction matters because an account, a network and a device are three separate things, and the word Alexa is used loosely for all of them in ordinary conversation.

Can I get Alexa on my phone?

Yes. Amazon publishes the Alexa app for phones and tablets, and it carries a good deal of the voice service directly. The app is also the usual route to an Echo speaker's settings. It is distributed through the iOS App Store and Google Play; smartpulsehome.site does not host it and does not link to any download.

Do Echo speakers only work on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi?

No. Mainstream Echo models are dual-band and can use either signal, older generations included. The 2.4 GHz band is mentioned so often in connected-device documentation because it travels further through walls and floors, which matters when a speaker sits at the far end of a house. It is a point about reach, not a limitation of the hardware.

What is setup mode, and is pairing mode the same thing?

Setup mode is the state a device enters when it is ready to be handed network details and is announcing itself over Bluetooth. Some manuals call the same state pairing mode. The two terms describe one condition, and how a particular Echo or Echo Dot generation enters it is documented by Amazon for that model.

Where does the Wi-Fi password end up after a speaker connects?

Inside the speaker. It holds the network name and password in its own memory and keeps them indefinitely, which is why it rejoins by itself after a power cut, and why removing the Alexa app from a phone changes nothing at all.

Does an Echo need an internet connection, or only Wi-Fi?

Both, and they are not the same thing. Wi-Fi is the wireless network inside the house; the internet connection is the line leaving it. A device can be joined to Wi-Fi perfectly well while the connection beyond the router is down, and the two failures look different on the light ring.

Is there an Alexa app for a computer?

Amazon's setup documentation for most Echo and Echo Dot models refers to a phone or tablet, because a mobile operating system can grant an application the nearby-device access that the Bluetooth stage depends on. A desktop web browser works to a different permission model, which is why instructions written for a computer read differently from instructions written for a handset.

Why do Alexa instructions look different from one household to another?

Three reasons, mostly. Phone platforms name their permissions differently and move them between releases. Echo generations differ in shape, in where the light sits and in their controls. And routers differ in whether they publish one network name or two. Any of the three is enough to make two sets of screenshots disagree while both remain correct.

  • Apple's and Google's developer documentation, at developer.apple.com and developer.android.com, since that is where handset permissions and radio handling are described
  • The Wi-Fi Alliance and Bluetooth SIG specifications, which govern how each band and every low-power protocol conducts itself
