How it gets its power
This is the first decision and it constrains every later one, including where a camera can go and how often it will record.

A solar panel changes the arithmetic for a battery camera, provided the aspect is right. South-facing with clear sky can keep up indefinitely. North-facing in winter will not.
The important question
Where the recordings actually go
Most buying decisions turn on features. This is the one that determines the running cost, the privacy position and what survives if the manufacturer disappears.

Check what the camera does with no subscription. Some keep working with live view and local recording. Others become close to useless. This differs by maker and it is rarely stated plainly on the box.
Position
Where a camera belongs
Position affects usefulness more than resolution does. A well-placed cheap camera beats an expensive one pointed at the wrong thing.
- High enough to be out of easy reach, and low enough that faces are recognisable rather than the tops of heads.
- Covering a route rather than a boundary. A camera watching the path to a door captures somebody for several seconds. One watching a fence line captures a moment.
- Out of direct sun. Facing into low sun produces silhouettes at exactly the times of day people come and go.
- Under some cover if it can be. Rain on a lens ruins night footage, and spiders are drawn to the warmth and the infrared.
- Away from anything that moves constantly. A tree branch or a road in view will generate alerts around the clock until you stop reading them.
What actually defeats a camera
Not resolution. Poor light, a lens fouled by weather or webs, a viewing angle that shows the top of a hood, and alert fatigue from too many false triggers. Each of those is a placement problem rather than a specification one.
Detection
Motion detection, and alert fatigue
The commonest failure in this category is not a camera that misses something. It is a camera that reports so much that nobody looks any more.
How detection usually works
- Passive infrared notices warmth moving. Cheap, low-power, and prone to triggering on sunlight moving across a wall.
- Pixel change notices the picture altering. Sensitive, and triggered by rain, headlights and branches.
- On-device recognition distinguishes a person from a cat from a car. Far fewer pointless alerts, and frequently the thing a subscription is actually selling.
Bringing it under control
- Activity zones. Draw out the road, the neighbour's path and the tree. This single step removes most nuisance alerts.
- Sensitivity, adjusted deliberately. Defaults are usually set high so the product feels responsive out of the box.
- Person-only alerts where the camera supports it, keeping everything else recorded but silent.
- Schedules, so a camera that faces a busy street is not alerting through the working day.
An alert you have learned to dismiss is worse than no alert. Tuning this in the first week is what decides whether the camera is useful in a year.
Worth thinking about
Privacy, and the people next door
A camera pointed beyond your own property raises questions that differ by country and are worth understanding rather than discovering.
- Coverage beyond your boundary is regulated in many places, and in some it brings data protection obligations with it. Where a camera sees a neighbour's garden, a shared path or the street, that is worth checking against local rules.
- Audio is frequently treated differently from video, and more strictly. Several cameras record it by default and it can usually be switched off.
- Telling people is often required, and is in any case what keeps a relationship with the neighbours intact.
- Indoor cameras want more thought than outdoor ones. Who can see the feed, whether it can be switched off, and whether visitors know it is there.
What the camera maker can see
Where footage travels through a manufacturer's service, that company holds recordings of your home. Their policy on staff access, on retention and on handing material to authorities is a legitimate thing to read before buying rather than after. Local storage sidesteps most of it.
After dark
Night vision, and what resolution is worth
Most of the footage anybody actually wants was recorded in poor light, which is where the specification sheet stops helping.
- Infrared produces monochrome and reaches a stated distance in ideal conditions. Rain, glass and dirty lenses all cut it.
- Colour night vision needs some ambient light, frequently from the camera's own lamp. Better for recognising clothing, and it announces the camera's presence.
- A spotlight gives usable colour and will irritate anyone whose bedroom it faces.
Resolution matters less than you would think
Beyond a point, more pixels mostly buy more bandwidth and more storage. What decides whether a face is recognisable is distance, lighting and lens angle. A wide-angle camera covering a whole driveway renders a face at the far end as a handful of pixels regardless of the headline figure.
Test at the intended distance before mounting. Hold the camera where it will live, look at the picture, and judge whether you could identify somebody from it.
Frequently encountered
Common situations, and what usually causes them
- Constant alerts from nothing. Sensitivity and zones. Almost always fixable in the application without touching the camera.
- Recordings start too late and miss the event. Battery cameras sleep and take a moment to wake. A plugged-in camera with continuous recording is the answer if this matters.
- Night footage is a white blur. Infrared bouncing off something close to the lens, frequently a wall, a soffit or rain on the housing.
- Battery life collapsed in winter. Expected. Cold reduces capacity considerably, and a camera on a busy path records far more in the dark months.
- The camera keeps dropping off the network. Signal at the mounting position, usually. Exterior walls take a great deal out of Wi-Fi, and cameras need more of it than most devices.
- Live view works, recordings do not. Frequently a lapsed subscription, or a memory card that has failed. Cards in outdoor cameras have a harder life than most.
Where a situation persists beyond these, the manufacturer holds the warranty and model-specific information. Anything requiring a cable through a wall belongs with a qualified electrician or installer.
