Sleep and bedroom devices, honestly assessed

Sunrise lamps, sleep tracking, and what these devices are actually measuring when they tell you how you slept.

Light is what a body reads to decide the hour. Almost everything that works in a bedroom works through that, and much of the rest is decoration.

Start here

Light is the part that genuinely works.

A lamp that brightens gradually before an alarm has a real basis: light is the main signal your body uses to decide it is morning, and arriving at it gradually is less jarring than a sound.

A sunrise lamp

Tracking is different. A device beside your bed, or under the mattress, is inferring sleep stages from movement, breathing and heart rate. That is estimation, not measurement.

Useful for patterns, unreliable for any single night. A tracker that says you slept badly on a night you felt fine is not evidence of anything, and treating it as such is its own problem.

Worth knowing

The parts with a straightforward case

Less discussed than tracking, and considerably more reliable.

Daylight, on a schedule

Waking to light

A lamp that brightens over twenty or thirty minutes before an alarm works with the mechanism the body already uses rather than against it. Most people who try one keep it, which is not true of most things in this category.

Motorised blinds do the same job with actual daylight, which is better still where the aspect allows. Our blinds guide covers that.

Winding down

Lighting that shifts warmer and dimmer through the evening is the same idea in reverse. Whether this makes a measurable difference to sleep is genuinely debated; whether a warm dim room in the evening is pleasant is not.

Sound

Steady broadband noise masks the sounds that wake people — a road, a neighbour, a household member on a different schedule. It is doing something simple and doing it well, and it needs no connection at all.

Where this stops being a technology question. Persistent sleep problems, loud snoring with pauses in breathing, or exhaustion that does not lift are matters for a doctor rather than an application. No consumer device diagnoses anything, and a reading from one is not a substitute for being seen by somebody qualified.

Practical

Reading a tracker sensibly

A short guide to not being misled by your own data.

What a bedroom's air does overnight
  • Trends beat nights. Four weeks of data showing consistently late sleep onset is informative. Tuesday's score is not.
  • Sleep stages are inferred. Assigning a night to light, deep and REM from movement and heart rate is estimation. The proportions are broadly indicative and the specific minutes are not.
  • Duration is the reliable figure. How long you were asleep, and when, is what these devices measure best, and it is also the most actionable thing they produce.
  • Scores are invented. Every manufacturer combines the underlying figures into a number by their own formula. Two devices on the same night will disagree, and neither is right.

When to stop looking

There is a documented pattern of people becoming anxious about sleep data to the point that the anxiety itself disturbs their sleep. If checking a score in the morning has started to shape how the day feels before anything has happened, the device has stopped helping.

Nothing is lost by taking it off for a fortnight.

What sleep tracking measures
+Are sleep trackers accurate?Read this oneClose it againTap to read the answer

For how long you slept and roughly when, reasonably so. For dividing that into stages, considerably less — that is inference from movement and heart rate rather than direct measurement, and independent comparisons show meaningful disagreement between devices.

Use them for patterns over weeks. The single-night score is the least reliable thing they produce and the one people pay most attention to.

The underlying principle is well established: light is the main cue the body uses for time of day. Arriving at it gradually rather than being woken by sound in the dark is a real difference, and most people who try one notice it.

It is not a treatment for anything. If mornings are difficult in a way that goes beyond preference, that is worth raising with a doctor.

+Is a microphone in the bedroom a concern?Read this oneClose it againTap to read the answer

It is a reasonable thing to think about. Devices that listen for snoring or movement are processing audio in a room where people are at their least guarded, and what leaves the device varies by manufacturer.

Check whether analysis happens on the device or on a server, and what is retained. Our privacy guide covers what to look for.

+What about children's rooms?Read this oneClose it againTap to read the answer

Lighting and sound are straightforward and widely used. Anything with a camera or microphone deserves more thought, because it is a recording device in a child's bedroom and the account protecting it is the only thing standing between that and anyone else.

Strong, unique passwords and two-factor authentication matter more here than anywhere else in the house.

Light is the thread running through it

How we checked this

Where this comes from

  • The literature each manufacturer issues for its own equipment, which is where intended behaviour is set down
  • What Apple and Google publish for people building software, since that is where handset permissions and radio handling are described
  • The wireless specifications themselves, which govern how each band and every low-power protocol actually conducts itself
  • Opening the applications and observing them in whatever state they are in today, with every check dated

Nothing stated here rests on a forum thread or an article with no name attached to it. Where a point simply cannot be pinned down, the page admits as much instead of papering over it.
