A wired doorbell draws from the low-voltage circuit your existing bell already uses. It never needs charging, wakes instantly, and can record without gaps.
A battery doorbell goes anywhere, mounts in minutes, and sleeps between events, which is why it sometimes misses the first second of one. It also wants taking down to charge, several times a year.

A battery doorbell sleeps to preserve its cells and wakes when its motion sensor fires. That wake takes a moment, and the moment is why footage sometimes begins with somebody already at the door rather than approaching it. A wired unit is always awake, so it catches the approach.
This is the detail people miss. A wired doorbell usually keeps your existing chime working, so the house still hears the bell whether or not anyone is holding a phone. A battery one generally does not; the alert goes to a handset, and if nobody is looking at one, nobody knows.
Several manufacturers sell a plug-in chime to solve exactly this. Worth budgeting for rather than discovering later.
Batteries lose capacity as temperature drops. A doorbell that runs three months in summer may want charging every six weeks in a hard winter, and that is a ladder in the cold.
One thing worth knowing. A doorbell transformer is low voltage, but it sits on mains wiring somewhere. If the existing bell has stopped working, or the wiring is unfamiliar, that is a job for a qualified electrician: not a weekend project, and not something this page can walk you through.

The recording model varies more between manufacturers than the hardware does.
Some doorbells keep clips on a card inside the unit. Some send everything to the manufacturer's servers and charge a monthly fee to keep it. Some do both, and a few will only show you a live view unless you subscribe.
Worth asking before purchase: what does this do if the internet drops, and what does it do if I stop paying? The answers are rarely on the box.

A wired doorbell usually will, because it is designed to sit on the same circuit the chime already uses. Some older mechanical chimes need a small component fitted alongside. Manufacturers supply it, and their documentation says when it is needed.
A battery doorbell almost certainly will not. The alert goes to a handset instead, and a separate plug-in chime is the usual answer.
Manufacturers quote three to six months. Real figures depend almost entirely on how busy the door is and how cold it gets. A quiet door in a mild climate can go a long time; a doorbell facing a pavement, waking at every passer-by, can want charging monthly.
Narrowing the motion zone so it watches the path rather than the street makes more difference than any other setting.
Generally not. Most doorbells route even a local live view through the manufacturer's servers, so an internet outage takes the whole thing offline — including, on many models, the ability to record.
A wired doorbell that keeps your original chime working at least means the bell still rings.
It needs a signal at the front door, which is often the weakest point in a house — an exterior wall, and usually the furthest room from the router. This is the single most common cause of stuttering footage.
