Everything else on this site controls something that cannot hurt anybody. A garage door can, which is why safety sensors are not optional and why a controller that bypasses them is dangerous rather than merely unwise.
A retrofit controller does not replace your opener. It sits alongside it and presses the button, electrically, in the same way the wall switch does.
If the existing opener has no photo-eye safety sensors, adding remote control to it is the wrong project. The sensors come first, and that is a job for the opener's manufacturer or an installer.

A retrofit controller has two parts. A small box wires across the same terminals your wall button uses, so that closing a contact triggers the opener exactly as a press would. A separate sensor, fixed to the door itself, reports whether the door is open or shut.
That is the whole arrangement. The controller has no knowledge of the door beyond open or shut, no ability to stop it part-way on most systems, and no way to know whether anything is underneath it. Everything protective is the opener's own safety system, which is why that system has to be present and working.
Usually a tilt sensor or a magnetic contact. It is what makes a notification meaningful — without it the app can send a command but cannot tell you the result, which for a garage door is most of the point.
A garage is frequently the worst-served part of a house for signal: detached or half-detached, thick walls, often a metal door in the way. This is the most common reason these systems behave unreliably, and no setting fixes a signal that is not arriving.
The rule that matters. Photo-eye sensors across the bottom of the opening stop the door if anything breaks the beam. Any product, arrangement or wiring trick that bypasses them removes the only thing standing between a closing door and whatever is under it. No convenience is worth that, and a controller advertised as working without them is telling you something important about itself.

A useful test before committing: if this operates while the garage is empty and nobody is watching, am I comfortable with every way that could go? For most households the answer is yes for opening and more considered for closing.

Most retrofit controllers work with a wide range of openers, because they only close a contact across the wall-button terminals. Compatibility lists are published by every manufacturer and are the place to check.
The complication is rolling-code openers, where some controllers need a matching module. Again, the compatibility list is where that is stated.
The opener stops working, and so does the controller. Every opener has a manual release cord that disengages the motor so the door can be lifted by hand — and every household should know where it is before it is needed.
Worth locating it now rather than in the dark. It is usually a red handle on a cord hanging from the rail.
Not through the controller, which is reached through your account rather than by radio at the door. The security question is really about that account, which is why two-factor authentication matters here more than on most devices.

Almost always signal. A garage is typically the furthest point from the router, often behind a masonry wall, sometimes with a metal door between. Any one of those is a problem; together they are why this category has more connection complaints than any other.
