The mechanism
An Amazon Echo or Echo Dot has no screen and no keyboard, which raises an interesting question: how does a Wi-Fi name and password ever reach it? The answer is a short, four-stage handover, and understanding it explains most of what these devices do.
Why the order matters. Each stage depends only on the one before it. An Echo can complete stage three — connecting to Wi-Fi — and fail stage four, or sit powered and idle having completed all four. The stages are separate states, not a single switch, and that is the single most useful thing to understand about the device.
Stored details
At the end of that handover, the Echo holds a copy of two things: the Wi-Fi network's name and its password. It keeps both in its own memory and holds them indefinitely.
This is why an Echo Dot reconnects to its network on its own after a power cut, without anybody doing anything: it re-syncs with the stored pair rather than starting over. It is also why deleting the Alexa app from a phone changes nothing: the phone was a courier, not a permanent part of the arrangement. The details live on the Echo itself.
The consequence follows naturally. The stored pair describes one specific network. Where a router is replaced or a provider changes, the name and password issued are generally new ones, and a stored copy of the old pair no longer describes anything that exists, leaving the speaker nothing to reconnect to. The device has not forgotten; it is remembering accurately, which in that situation is precisely the difficulty.
Even a replacement router carrying the old name and password can behave differently underneath, because newer equipment may require a newer security standard or hand out its local addresses on a different scheme. The name a network broadcasts and the arrangement behind it are two separate things.
Amazon account and Wi-Fi network are independent. Which Amazon account an Echo answers to is held by Amazon on its servers, not by the router. A device keeps its account registration across any number of network changes, and being on the right network says nothing about which account it belongs to.
The ring
On a speaker with no display, that band of colour is the entire vocabulary the device has for reporting on itself. Each shade carries a specific meaning, and the set is small enough to learn in a minute.
On the sphere-shaped generations the ring runs around the base rather than the top, which catches people out when they go looking for it on the lid.
The range
Amazon has revised the Echo range several times since the first Amazon Echo, and the names have accumulated. The shapes below cover it broadly; the differences are worth knowing before going looking for a light — or a screen — in the wrong place.
The form of the original full-size Echo and of the pre-2025 Echo Studio. Larger drivers, so it fills a room properly, and it takes a mains socket rather than a shelf edge.
Recent generations of this shape are dual-band, meaning they can use either Wi-Fi signal. The slower band still reaches further where a device sits some distance from the router.
The ball arrived with the fourth generation and continued through the fifth. The small ones are the Echo Dot; the larger one is the full-size Echo of the same era. Size apart, they behave identically.
On these the light ring runs around the base rather than the top.
The flat Echo Dot, a common gift and bundled extra in its day and still widely in use. The ring sits on the top face where it is easy to see.

The Echo Show — the 5, the 8, the 11, the 15 and the 21, with the older 10 still in many homes — along with the round-faced Spot. These guide their own introduction on the display.
Because they have a screen and a touch interface, their settings are reachable on the device itself rather than only through the phone application.
The Echo Dot is the small round speaker and the one most households own. Its first three generations were flat pucks; the fourth and fifth are spheres. In September 2025 Amazon added the Echo Dot Max, a larger and more powerful model in the same family, which reached buyers at the end of October that year.
The Echo Show family carries a touchscreen: the Show 5, 8, 11, 15 and 21, with the older Show 10 still in many homes and the round-faced Echo Spot alongside them. The Show 8 and the new Show 11 were both introduced in the September 2025 revision. Screen models differ from the rest in one practical way: they present their own settings on the display, so the phone application is not the only route to them.
Echo Studio is the large speaker built for music. The 2025 version was redesigned into a round, knit-covered enclosure roughly forty per cent smaller than its predecessor. Echo Pop is the compact half-sphere sold as an entry model.
Because the same product name has covered several quite different objects, a generation is often the only way to say which device is meant. The table below names them and describes what distinguishes each. It is a naming reference: it does not carry instructions, and specifications for any current model are published on Amazon's own product pages.

Where a procedure differs by model or generation — most often the button combination that returns a device to setup mode, which some manuals call pairing mode — Amazon's documentation for that specific model is the authority, since those combinations have changed across the years. Plain English
Documentation about Alexa, Echo speakers and home Wi-Fi is written by people who have forgotten which words are ordinary and which are not. One example before the rest: Wi-Fi is the spelling used by the body that defines the standard, while wifi and wi fi are written everywhere else, and all three mean the same network. These are the ones that trip readers up most often.
App-store literacy
App-store searches can return guides, utilities and applications that use Alexa-related language. An icon, a prominent placement or a familiar word is not, by itself, evidence that an app comes from Amazon. The listing provides several details that can be read together.

How speech works
A voice assistant does very little of its thinking in the room. The device listens locally for one word, and everything after that happens on Amazon's servers and comes back as sound. Tap any card to turn it over.
Consumer protection
Searches about voice speakers attract a substantial industry of fraudulent operations. They are not subtle once the shape of them is known, and the surest defence is not a list of warning signs but knowing exactly what the genuine channels are — because anything outside them is, by definition, not Amazon.

The reasoning is worth stating plainly. A verification code exists precisely to prove that the person holding it is the account owner. Handing it to somebody else transfers that proof to them, which is the whole purpose of asking for it. A genuine representative already knows this and will never ask.

The code exists to prove that whoever holds it owns the account. Handing it over transfers that proof, which is the only reason anybody asks. No genuine representative ever does.

Connected-home products can use several layers of networking at once. Matter, Thread, Zigbee and Wi-Fi name different standards and roles within that broader system; none is simply another name for the others.

Alexa is the voice service; an Echo is a piece of hardware that carries it. Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Show, Echo Studio, Echo Spot and Echo Pop are all Echo devices running Alexa. The distinction matters because an account, a network and a device are three separate things, and the word Alexa is used loosely for all of them in ordinary conversation.
Yes. Amazon publishes the Alexa app for phones and tablets, and it carries a good deal of the voice service directly. The app is also the usual route to an Echo speaker's settings. It is distributed through the iOS App Store and Google Play; smartpulsehome.site does not host it and does not link to any download.
No. Mainstream Echo models are dual-band and can use either signal, older generations included. The 2.4 GHz band is mentioned so often in connected-device documentation because it travels further through walls and floors, which matters when a speaker sits at the far end of a house. It is a point about reach, not a limitation of the hardware.
Setup mode is the state a device enters when it is ready to be handed network details and is announcing itself over Bluetooth. Some manuals call the same state pairing mode. The two terms describe one condition, and how a particular Echo or Echo Dot generation enters it is documented by Amazon for that model.

Amazon's setup documentation for most Echo and Echo Dot models refers to a phone or tablet, because a mobile operating system can grant an application the nearby-device access that the Bluetooth stage depends on. A desktop web browser works to a different permission model, which is why instructions written for a computer read differently from instructions written for a handset.
Three reasons, mostly. Phone platforms name their permissions differently and move them between releases. Echo generations differ in shape, in where the light sits and in their controls. And routers differ in whether they publish one network name or two. Any of the three is enough to make two sets of screenshots disagree while both remain correct.
